Eating out @ Kochi?

A barren land.... that is the word Raji chechi used some days back to describe my blog....it is true.... for the last 10 weeks I couldn’t add anything to it. I was not busy... then why? Inherent Laziness!!! What else?

Thought of what should I write this time... terror attack is almost forgotten and economic crisis is eating everything up in a big way... but both lost their charm... oops.... can I say that? Not really. “What next” was the question before me. I thought over it and then came the idea of writing about what I love the most..... FOOD!!!!!!

Okay ... it is a good pick ... I thought... But what can I write about food? I have never tried anything exquisite in kitchen except for my abandoned efforts to make chapattis which usually ended up as Dosas, back in nineties when I was in my LP classes.

Some days back, I was having my dinner at Pai Dosa at M.G Road when I thought of lettering about places serving tongue lingering food in my beloved city..... the great Kochi! Whenever you get a chance to be in Kochi, try out these places. I would not discuss Taj or Hilton... you know them well. My picks are those 3 smaller places adding unique tastes to this beautiful city. But please understand, these places are as famous as the Taj... even Outlook traveller have listed some of these!!!!!

1. PAI DOSA: My favourite place. A small, but great place to eat out for all those who love their taste buds. They will just mesmerise you with about 56 varieties of Dosa! Their Kanjeepuram dosa is just as great as an elegant woman in Kanjeepuram silk saree! Try Kada Bulls-eye Dosa.... you can’t stop with just one!! Try a simple Masala dosa or Thattil Kutty dosa.... you will no more like dosas served anywhere else... except those from your mom’s own kitchen!!!

Pai Dosa is located at MG Road., opposite Karalkada. Be here with your family for dinner anytime before 12 midnight. An ideal place for all vegetarians and eggetarians!

2. KAYEES: Next to nothing, it is the best, if you happen to be at Mattanchery for lunch. Started by (late) Kayikka some decades back, it is now the synonym for delicious Biriyani.

Even in this age of pizzas and fast food, Kayees evoke enthusiastic response from those who have been to this modest restaurant that serves biriyanis of all descriptions in clean and tidy surroundings. Demand for its celebrated biriyani, ghee rice, fish stew and mutton curry is ever growing. Of course, the reasonable pricing of the menu makes it doubly attractive for any visitor to the restaurant. Adding to the charm is the fact that a visit to old Kayees would put one through a wild bout of nostalgia. Period furniture and hand-wound clocks makes it perfect.

Younger generation of Kayikka have really made it a brand and they have a hotel serving the same great food opposite DH Ground, in the heart of Kochi.

Kayees is perfect for that pure Non – vegetarian tongue. Be seen for lunch with your family!

3. MADHAVAS: It was an inescapable fraction of my days at CUSAT. Located in North Kalamassery, opposite Apollo Tyres, this place is nothing but lip-smacking. Not advisable for families, but those food buddies like me cannot resist the yummy fragrance of their preparations that you get when you cross the spot!

Madhavas cater to all classes of the society. Labourers come in huge groups for their dinner here. Students from CUSAT will always be there. People come in their luxury cars to this road side cafe! Anyone is welcome, but don’t take your family with you... the ambience is weird at times.

I think I have some more places for you... like Rajus Dhaba at Eloor, Priya Homely Food at Edapally and so on.... but these are simply the best places available at Kochi to treat your taste buds.
